Veuve Clicquot N.V. Rose
Grape
50-55% Pinot Noir, 28-33% Chardonnay, and 15-20% Pinot Meunier
Its Origins
Philippe Clicquot-Muiron established Veuve Clicquot in 1772. However, it was Phillipe`s daughter-in-law, Nicole-Barbe Clicquot, who really laid the foundations of the modern company. She was one of the great innovators - it was she who invented remuage in the early 19th century. Now it is part of the LVMH group. The Non-Vintage Brut is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier. It has a nose of white fruits and freshly baked bread and is fresh and balanced on the palate. The vintage wines are similar in character but with more depth of fruit and more structure. La Grande Dame, first made in 1969, is a rich, smooth and finely textured Champagne that simply oozes class and breeding. Beginning with the Bouzy vineyards that originally belonged to founder Philippe Clicquot, the Veuve vineyards now cover 393 hectares of land, spread over the very best Champagne growing areas: 12 of the 17 Grands Crus, and 18 of the 44 Premiers Crus.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars Cuisine
"Wild red berries and a fleshy, seamless, lingering palate"
92/100 Galloni's Vinous, Josh Raynolds
"Vivid yellow. Aromas of orange, buttered toast and white flowers are lifted by a bright mineral topnote. Rich and expansive on entry, then brighter and more lithe in the middle, offering fresh pear, citrus pith and ginger flavors and a touch of brioche. Closes on a spicy note, with strong thrust and impressive cling. Drinks very nicely right now but has the substance and spine to suggest that patience will be rewarded. (Made from roughly two-thirds pinot noir and one-third chardonnay; L122107)"
17/20 Jancis Robinson
"Pale strawberry and packed with confident, mouth-filling fruit that ends dry rather than sweet and is excellently balanced. Mouthfilling – good with or without food."
